Michael Phelps
It has been widely discussed this year that Michael Phelps will be trying to beat out Olympic swimming legend Mark Spitz’s record of 7 gold medals. Last night, Phelps became one step closer to realizing this dream with help of current teammate Jason Lezak in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay. As a seasoned Olympian (accounting for participating in 3 Olympics), Lezak is all too familiar with the stress and strain of anchoring this event in both the 2000 and 2004 Olympic games. This time however, Lezak refused to come up short, and wound up swimming the fastest anchor leg in Olympic history. Shredding .73 seconds off the record with a bullet anchor speed of 46.06 seconds, The USA took the gold by shattering the overall world record for this event. Finishing in 3 min 8.24 seconds (a full 4 seconds faster than world records), Lezak tightened up his swim in order to beat out the French team by only 8/100 of a second. More over, if Michael Phelps is able to achieve a new 8 gold medal record this year, sponsor SPEEDO will graciously give him a million dollar check. It has not been established if the two will share in that prize money!
