Father’s Day Shopping For The Father Who Wants Zero

I don’t think my Dad has ever answered this question in his entire life. Normally I get the “I just want to be left alone to relax” routine mixed with the occasional “You know what I really want ….(pause for dramatic results) Nothing” bit. Oh yeah then there is the “It’s O.K I’d rather you save your money”. Overall, these answers are absolutely fine by me. Hey, if you want nothing Dad, you will get NOTHING. Ask and ye shall receive! Not having to go out and shop is much easier on my own R&R schedule not to mention my wallet, so thanks for the get out of jail free card. But lets be real, no Dad wants nothing, and the days of buying unnecessary ties have turned into days of buying unnecessary DVD’s that he will never watch, or books that will at best make it to his bathroom library.

So what do you get for the Father Who Wants 0? If there is one thing I have learned over time is that most men and all Dad’s enjoy a practical, USEFUL gift. Why else would they ask for a day off from the phone ringing, or from Mom complaining about people walking with shoes on the good carpet. Good luck trying to wrap that present (I can see it now, “umm mom can you not only stop nagging but also would you mind wearing this bow on your head?”). I digress, but the fact is Father’s Day is coming around the corner and you need to come up with something good, and fast.

My recommendation is to go with something you know he will need, not necessarily something you think he will want. Take for example a Thule or Yakima car rack and/or rooftop cargo box for easy storage of bikes or camping items. You know what type of Dad you have, so if he is into outdoorsy activities then this is really an ideal solution for you, and him. Maybe your Dad is more handy and needs a new set of Stanley Tools for some home improvements. I don’t know about you, but I don’t know any dad who enjoys saying “Ugh sorry honey, I umm ugh just don’t have the right tools for the job”. This does not make for a feel good situation. O.k so we have got car equipment, tools, maybe some nice Oakley’s will do the trick, or maybe some certified pre owned golf clubs by Callaway will be the gift of choice this Father’s Day. The fact is, there are many options out there that are within your economic reach AND will not wind up just collecting dust somewhere. So the only question left now is, what is your response going to be when your father asks for zero.
